Let's Help Create Wigs for Women with Cancer

“Flor, how does my wig look? Do you like it, or shall I get it in another color?” Those were the exact words my best friend had once texted me. I said “I LOVE it, you look beautiful!” Margot, was a beautiful young woman, she was full of life, with a heart of gold and with long straight hair, like the ones you see in a commercial. But due to chemo treatment she had lost her hair.  It was emotional, to say the least, but she put a smile on and rocked those wigs like no one else!  After all, hair was the least of her worries, when she was trying to beat cancer.

That’s why today September 8th is a very special day for me, today is National Donate Your Hair day and it also marks the beginning of The Pantene Beautiful Lengths #8or8 Challenge, which asks people to donate $8 or cut 8” of hair to help create real-hair wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer. I think this is great because it lets everyone get involved. If you can’t donate hair but still want to help women fighting cancer, you can easily make a monetary donation to the Beautiful Lengths Fund.

This campaign hits very close to home because I saw my best friend, Margot, fight cancer and while doing it she lost her hair as well.  I know what these women endure and how hard this battle is … I’ve sat there and listened to a few women cry, scream, sob and get depressed over this horrible disease. And on top of that, loosing their hair doesn’t make it any easier. That’s why I think this is an amazing cause that could help so many women in need of wigs.

Rewind to a year ago … I was on Facebook updating my status when I stumble upon my gorgeous cousin Kelita’s picture. I sat there and tears started rolling down my face.  There she was with the biggest smile for somebody battling breast cancer could have, and with a lob … she too, was wearing a wig. I was crying because I could not believe cancer had hit another beautiful soul and somebody that I love deeply.  Kelita is my favorite cousin and while growing up in Peru I looked up to her. She was the most beautiful girl with a gorgeous smile, a heart of gold and hair deserving of an award.  I talked to her right after I saw her picture and she was funny and sweet as ever. One would have never guessed that she was battling cancer.  This is another reason why I’m completely devoted to this #8or8 Challenge. I believe together we can create more wigs for these amazing women. Let’s do it, Queens!!!!

So, are you wondering how can you help this cause? It’s very simple; for one, you can donate your beautiful healthy hair to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program by visiting your local salon, measure a ponytail of at least 8 inches and make the cut.  If you are interested in donating your hair, here are the hair donations requirements:

•  Each hair donation must be at least 8 inches long
• Hair may be colored with vegetable dyes, rinses and semi-permanent dyes. It cannot be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated.
• Gray hair is difficult to use in the wig-making process, so hair may not be more than 5% gray at the time of donation

But if you can’t donate your hair for many reasons, in my case I can’t donate it because it has been chemically treated, you can still help this cause by donating $8to The Pantene Beautiful Lenghts Fund, which was founded in 2014 with the hopes to give individuals like myself the opportunity to provide our support to this great cause. The fund accepts monetary donations and 100% of contributions made to The Pantene Beautiful Lenghts Fund go directly to helping create free, real-hair wigs for women battling cancer.

Since my family and I can’t donate our hair we have already donated $8.

“Flor, ¿qué tal se ve mi peluca? ¿Te gusta o mejor me la compro en otro color?” Esas fueron las palabras que mi amiga una vez me texteo. Yo le conteste: “La AMO, te ves divina!” Margot, era joven, linda, llena de vida, con un corazón de oro y con el cabello largo lacio, como los que ves en un comercial. Pero por haberse sometido a la quimoterapia, había perdido su lindo cabello. Yo sé que para ella no era fácil ponerse esas pelucas, ya que era un recordatorio constante de que tenía cancer, pero como una luchadora se las ponía y le sonreía al mundo. Al fin y al cabo, eso era lo que menos le importaba, cuando tenía que luchar por su vida.

Por eso, este día es súper importante para mí. Este 8 de septiembre es elDía Nacional para la Donación de Cabello y también hoy arranca el comienzo del reto #8or8 Challenge de Pantene. Este reto es un llamado a la acción a nivel nacional solicitando que la gente contribuya $8 o que se corten y donen 8 pulgadas de cabello para crear pelucas gratuitas para mujeres que han perdido su cabello debido al cáncer. A mí me encanta la idea porque permite que todos participen. Asi que si no pueden donar pelo pero quieren ayudar a esas mujeres luchando contra el cancer pueden hacer una donación fácilmente a The Beautiful Lengths Fund.

Esta campaña realmente me toca el corazón, porque yo vi en carne propia como mi amiga Margot lucho contra el cáncer  por muchos años y al mismo tiempo perdió todo su cabello. Yo sé lo que estas mujeres pasan y que difícil es esta lucha para ellas … me he sentado y he escuchado a estas mujeres llorar, gritar, molestarse y deprimirse a raiz de esta enfermedad. Y encima de todo esto, también pierden su cabello. Por eso creo que esta es una gran causa, por que ayuda a muchas mujeres a contar con pelucas y quizás devolverles la sonrisa por un instante.

Retrocedamos el tiempo por un segundo … hace un año yo estaba en Facebook  cuando vi una foto que me dejo sin palabras. No me pude contener y la lágrimas empezaron a caer por mi rostro. Era la foto de mi prima favorita, Kelita, sonriente, con el cabello corto tipo lob … ella también tenía una peluca y en ese momento combatia el cáncer al seno.   Yo lloraba por que no podía entender que esta maldita enfermedad, había afectado una alma tan bella como la de mi prima y a alguien que quiero muchísimo. Kelita siempre ha sido mi prima favorita y desde que era chiquita para mí ha sido una de las mujeres más guapas y lindas que he conocido. Ella tiene un corazón de oro, es tan dulce, tierna, buena, abnegada y tenía el cabello digno de un premio.  Inmediatamente después que vi su foto hable con ella, y la escuche sonriente y más dulce que nunca. Uno nunca se hubiese imaginado lo que ella estaba pasando en ese momento … su sonrisa y su actitud eran como la de una mujer que no tenía preocupación alguna. Esta es una razón más, por la que apoyo este reto #8or8 Challenge de Beautiful Lengths. Estoy completamente segura que juntas podemos crear más pelucas para estas mujeres. Si, lo podemos lograr mis Queens!!!

Si te preguntas como puedes ayudar a esta causa, es muy sencillo.  Puedes donar tu cabello sano al programa Pantene Beautiful Lengths a fin de crear pelucas gratuitas. Si estas interesada en donar tu cabello, aquí están los requisitos:

• El cabello donado debe ser por lo menos 8 pulgadas de largo
• El cabello puede estar teñido con tinturas vegetales, enjuagues y tinturas semipermanentes. No puede tener aclarador de cabello, ni tinturas permanentes o tratamientos químicos.

My Week at Hispanicize in Miami Thanks to P&G Pruébalo & te Encantará

As you know, last week I headed to Miami to attend Hispanicize! This was the first conference that I ever attended when I started blogging and I have not missed one since then. This time around, I was even more excited to go because I was the exclusive on-site P&G Try it & Love it/Pruébalo & te Encantará social media ambassador.

I love Miami and I loved waking up everyday with the view of the bay and palm trees everywhere. Well, I have to admit that what made this conference even more fun was the fact that I had a glam squad at my service! Who doesn’t dream of that right? Yes, P&G had a lounge at the conference where I got my hair and makeup done every day. It was so much fun trying out different makeup and hairstyles for the week.

One of the days, the makeup artist, Aileen, gave me a graphic eye and I got so many compliments. I had never done it before and I really liked it. To get the look, she used COVERGIRL truBLEND Liquid Makeup and COVERGIRL + Olay Eye Rehab to color correct and conceal dark circles around my eyes. Since Miami calls for less clothes and vibrant colors, you know I had to step up my outfit game for the conference! I wore a lot of pencil skirts and crop tops; probably my favorite trend right now. Overall, I had a great time at Hispanicize, I loved seeing friends and colleagues and making new contacts. I can’t wait to do it all over again next year!

Como saben, la semana pasada me fui a Miami para asistir a la conferencia de Hispanicize. Esta fue la primera conferencia que asistí cuando empecé mi blog y no me he perdido una desde ese entonces. Esta vez estaba mucho más emocionada que antes, ya que iba a ser la embajadora exclusiva de las redes sociales para P&G Try it & Love it/Pruébalo & te Encantará.

Amo Miami y ame levantarme cada mañana con la vista de la bahía y palmeras por todos lados. Además, el calorcito de Miami es único en comparación con otras partes de los Estados Unidos. Pero tengo que admitir que lo que hizo esta conferencia todavía más divertida fue que todas las mañanas iba al salón de P&G para que me mimaran y me pusieran bella. Si viven en un lugar húmedo saben que feo se puede poner el pelo con tanta humedad y esa era mi peor pesadilla llegando a Miami. Y que les puedo decir de estas trenzas que me hicieron? Quede enamorada!

En cuestión de outfits opte por usar piezas más coloridas y es que estaba en la capital del sol y no en Nueva York. Use muchas faldas tubos con tops cortitos. How to do a braided Bun

We all have bad hair days or days when we don’t want to spend more than a couple of minutes styling our hair; I know I do. And when that day comes my go-to hairstyle is the donut bun. It looks beautiful and it takes less than five minutes to achieve the look. This day in particular I was running late to an event and thought this would be the perfect look. As you can tell I added a braid to make it more fancy!

Todas tenemos días que nuestro cabello simplemente esta espantoso o dias donde no queremos pasar mas de cinco minutos arreglandolo, al menos eso me pasa a mi de vez en cuando. Y cuando eso sucede, automáticamente me hago un moño. Se ve lindo y toma menos de cinco minutos hacertelo. Ese día tenia un evento pero no tenia mucho tiempo para arreglarme, así que el moño me salvo la vida. Como se daran cuanta le agrega una trenza, que ademas de estar muy de moda, le dio un toque mas glamoroso.

If you want to rock the donut bun you are going to need a donut, two elastic bands, bobby pins, a brush and hairspray.

• Make a ponytail where you want the bun and slide the donut (tube) over it.
• Then cover the donut with the remaining of your hair and secure it with an elastic band.
• At this point you will have a few pieces of hair left around the donut, which you are going to braid in two sections
• Then you are going to wrap one braid around the donut and secure it with bobby pins. You are going to repeat the same thing with the other braid.
• Add Elnett hairspray and you are ready to rock and roll

Si quieres hacerte un moño, vas a necesitar un donut o bagel, ganchos, dos gomas de cabello, un cepillo y laca.

• Empieza por hacerte una cola de caballo e introduce la cola por el agujero del donut.
• Luego cubre todo el donut con el cabello que resta y coloca con una goma por encima.
• A estas alturas te van a sobrar pedazos de cabello alrededor de la donut, los cuales vas a trenzar en dos secciones.
• Después vas a enrollar alrededor del moño una trenza y asegurarla con ganchos. Vas a repetir el mismo procedimiento con la otra trenza.
• Al final asegurarte de ponerte laca para fijar el peinado.

TV Hair with L'Oreal

A lot of people think that I started doing Television after I launched my blog, but it was actually the other way around. I’ve been doing TV since 1999 (I was just a baby :-)). I used to be a sports reporter/anchor for Telemundo and Univision. So, after many years of working in the industry, I know what works on TV as far as hair, makeup and clothes go. Trust me, it is very different than your everyday look.

I believe that hair is one of your best accessories because it frames your face; therefore you have to take really good care of it. Especially being on television, I want to make sure my hair looks shiny and healthy. The last thing I want is to get a close up and my hair looks dry and damaged. With that being said, if I noticed that my hair is lacking something or if it feels dry (winter can do that to your hair) I like to use L’Oreal Power Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner I also apply Power Moisture Rush Mask as needed.

Half-Up, Half-Down Hair

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of celebrities wear their hair half-up, half-down and I’m not surprised, because it looks effortless and fabulous at the same time. The best thing about this hairdo is that you can rock it at any age and regardless of your hair type. Plus, it is very easy to do! When I wore this outfit, tt was very windy in New York so I felt this was the perfect hairdo, plus I wanted to show the faux-fur collar on my coat.

How to achieve the look:

• After I style my hair as usual, I tease the crown to give it more volume. If you are not sure how to tease your hair it’s really easy. Start by taking a small section of your hair and comb downward toward the scalp, make sure you tease it in small strokes and add hair spray to each section. I love Elnett hair spray because is not too strong and my hair feels natural with just a little bit of hold.
• If your hair is very tangled after all the teasing, don’t worry, use a brush to smooth it out.
• After you are done teasing the crown of your hair pull half of it back into a ponytail.
• Then continue to tease the rest of your hair and apply hairspray. I’m telling you, hair spray will be your best friend for getting this hairdo!

Como lograr este look:

• Después que me arreglo el cabello como de costumbre, me bato el cabello en la coronilla, para darle mas volumen. Si no estas segura como batirlo, empieza por tomar una parte pequeña de cabello y empujala hacia abajo, por detrás, acercandote a la raíz. Continua haciendo esto hasta que veas que tu cabello tiene bastante volumen. Luego asegurate de agregarle laca como esta de Elnett.
• Si tu cabello esta enredado después de batirlo, no te preocupes, usa un cepillo para desenredarlo.
• Luego toma la parte que te batiste y la de los lados y haste una media cola.
• Al final bate el resto de tu cabello y fijalo con laca. Te darás cuenta que la laca sera tu mejor amigo para lograr este look.

Side Braid and Jimmy Choos

What can I say my Queens? I’ve always love color. As soon as I saw this dress, I knew it had to be mine! I can’t wait to wear it during the Summer with my loose curls and some high heels. It is still cold in New York right now, but I was dying to wear this dress, so I threw on this zebra coat and some fun boots. For some reason when I was walking down Soho I felt like the Latina version of Carrie Bradshaw – you know, all the color and the Jimmy Choos!

¿Que puedo decir que todavía no sepan mis Queens? AMO los colores vivos. Por eso ni bien vi este vestido en Zara, sabia que tenia que ser mío. Ya me muero de ganas de ponermelo este Verano con mi cabello suelto y ondulado y obviamente con unos tacones. Ahorita todavía esta haciendo frío en Nueva York, pero tenia unas ganas locas de ponermelo, por lo que me puse este abrigo de estampado de zebra y estas botas que me encantan. Por alguna razón cuando estaba caminando por SoHo me sentía como la version Latina de Carrie Bradshaw - ya saben los Jimmy Choos y su ropa colorida.

I don’t think a pair of shoes is the only thing that can break or make an outfit; your hair can too! I wish some women would pay more attention to their hair; it frames your face and can speak volumes about you. With that being said, I didn’t want my hair to compete with the outfit, so I thought a side braid would be the perfect touch to complete the look. So, I applied a volumizing spray such as EverStyle Volume Rootlift from L'Oreal and I let my hair air-dry. Then, I parted my hair to the side and braided it. To make sure my braid stayed in place I applied Elnett hair spray. So, next time you are not sure how to style your hair maybe do a braid. I think they are feminine and classy!

Ademas de los zapatos creo que el cabello puede hacer que un look se vea espectacular o fatal.  Pienso que algunas mujeres deberian prestar mas atencion a su cabello, ya que ademas de enmarcarte el rostro puede hablar muy bien de ti.  El día que me puse este outfit, no quería que mi pelo compitiera con mi vestimenta, por lo que pense que una trenza seria el toque perfecto para completar mi look.  Así que despues de lavarme el cabello, me aplique un spray para dar volumen, como este de L'Oreal, y luego deje que se secara al aire libre. Quick and Easy Side bun with L'Oreal

Ever since I moved to New York City, not a week goes by that I’m not at an event, a party or on a red carpet. The Big Apple is the city that never sleeps, so there are parties happening all the time and it’s the perfect excuse to get glammed up! So, besides picking the perfect outfit, I also have to make sure my makeup and hair are perfect, especially because I get photographed at these events and we all know that we don’t want to look back at pictures and say, “What was I thinking?” Ha, ha, ha.

Since I wear my hair down most of the time, when it comes to a red carpet, I love to put my hair in a bun, especially the side bun. I think it looks classy, sophisticated and glamorous at the same time. Plus, it takes me less than five minutes to achieve the look!

Desde que me mude a Nueva York, no pasa una semana sin que este en un evento, una fiesta o en la alfombra roja. La Gran Manzana realmente es la ciudad que nunca duerme, así que hay fiestas todos lo días; excusa perfecta para arreglarme.  Ademas de escoger el atuendo perfecto, también tengo que asegurarme que mi maquillaje y cabello están impecables, especialmente por todas las fotos que me tomo.

Como se han dado cuenta, por lo general uso mi cabello suelto, pero cuando tengo que asistir a una alfombra roja, me encanta hacerme un moño.  Creo que se ve elegante, clásico, sofisticado y glamuroso. Ademas me toma menos de cinco minutos hacermelo.

How to style a quick and easy side bun:

• I begin by washing my hair with L’Oreal Color Vibrancy shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair like mine. This duo helps to instantly nourish color-treated hair and shield color from fading. If your have virgin hair you can use L’Oreal Smooth Intense shampoo and conditioner instead.
• Then, I apply L’Oreal Color Vibrancy  Dual Protect spray that nourishes and conditions my hair while helping it protect against the heat and color fading UV rays.
• I blow dry my hair until is completely dry. Then I part it to one side and tie it into a low ponytail with an elastic band.
• Then I twist my hair until you form a bun and proceed to secure it with bobby pins.
• To make sure the style stays in place all night I add Elnett hair spray. You know I’ve been talking about this hairspray since I started my blog!

Como hacerse un moño fácil y rápido: 

• Empiezo por lavarme el cabello con champu y acondicionador L’Oreal Color Vibrancy  para cabello teñido como el mio. Si tienes cabello virgen te recomiendo que uses el champu y acondicionador L’Oreal Smooth Intense
• Luego me aplico un spray protector de calor como L’Oreal Color Vibrancy Dual Protect Spray  y me lo seco con la secadora.
• Despues me pongo la raya del pelo para un lado y me hago una cola. De alli le doy vueltas a la cola hasta formar un moño, el cual sujeto con ganchitos.
• Para asegurarme que el moño me dura toda la noche me hecho la laca Elnett. Ya saben que he estado hablando de esta laca desde que emepce mi blog.

Wavy hair with L'Oreal

I have always loved hats and headpieces. I think they are a fun way to change your look! Sometimes when I’m not sure what to wear my go-to piece is a hat or headpiece. This particular day I wanted to wear these red pants, which haven’t seen a lot of action since NY Fashion Week, and since it was cold, I threw on my white coat. But the outfit felt incomplete, so to spice things up I put on this gorgeous headpiece and my zebra platforms. Siempre me han encantado los sombreros, los gorros y los accesorios para el cabello. Pienso que es una manera divertida de cambiar tu look. A veces cuando no estoy segura que ponerme lo primero que agarro es un sombrero. Si sigues mi blog, sabes que los uso bastante. Ese día quería ponerme estos pantalones rojos, los cuales no los usaba desde la Semana de la Moda de Nueva York, y como hacia frío, me puse este abrigo.
